On this day in 1988, Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams led his team to a 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. Despite being down 10-0, the Redskins reeled off 42 unanswered points, thanks to MVP Williams’ four passing touchdowns in a single quarter (still a Super Bowl record).

Celebrating his 39th birthday today is former University of Michigan and NBA point guard and current ESPN commentator Jalen Rose. After being selected 13th overall by the Denver Nuggets in 1994, Rose played for six NBA teams, including an Indiana Pacers team that made three consecutive Eastern Conference finals appearances.
33 years ago today, the Cleveland Cavaliers downed the Los Angeles Lakers 154-153 in quadruple overtime. Cavs forward Mike Mitchell (pictured above with coach Stan Albeck) ended the marathon with two free throws and 34 points. While the Cavs finished the season 37-45 (fourth in the Central Division), the Lakers went on to win the franchise’s eighth championship.

On this day in 1995, Andre Agassi defeated Pete Sampras to win the first of his four career Australian Open titles. Agassi and Sampras met in five tournament finals in ’95, with Agassi winning three and Sampras two.
On January 26th 1986, the Chicago Bears trounced the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX by a score of 46-10, the most lopsided victory in Super Bowl history. The ’85 Bears also hold the distinction of being the first sports team to have their own rap video for “The Super Bowl Shuffle,” which was nominated for a Grammy the same year.
61 years ago today, Steven Roland Prefontaine was born in Coos Bay, Oregon. “Pre” once held the American record in seven distance track events from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters. An aggressive runner, Pre was quoted as saying, “No one will ever win a 5,000 meter by running an easy two miles. Not against me.”
Today Homage wishes a happy 43rd birthday to former NHL winger Brendan Shanahan, who won three Stanley Cups (’97, ’98, ’02) with the Detroit Red Wings. The only player in NHL history with over 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes, Shanahan holds an unofficial NHL record for most Gordie Howe hat tricks (a goal, an assist, and a fight in the same game) with 17.
