45 years ago today, the AFL granted a franchise to the city of Cincinnati, and former Cleveland Browns owner and coach Paul Brown named the new team the Bengals. Upon the completion of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Browns were moved to the AFL-based American Football Conference and placed in the AFC Central, the same division as the Bengals, and an instant rivalry was born.

On this day in 1873, Maryland’s Pimlico Race Course introduced a new stakes race for three-year-olds dubbed the Preakness. The first race drew seven starters, and Survivor collected the $2,050 winning purse, winning by 10 lengths. (Pictured above is Silver Charm winning the Preakness in 1997.)

On May 22nd, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic celebrates his 25th birthday. Ranked World #1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals since July 4th 2011, Djokovic has won five Grand Slam singles titles as well as the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Today Homage wishes a happy 41st birthday to driver Tony Stewart, the only driver to win championships in both IndyCar and NASCAR. In 2011, “Smoke” became the first owner-driver since ’92 to win the Cup Series championship, which ended Jimmie Johnson’s streak of five consecutive championships.

On this day in 1974, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Led by MVP Bernie Parent (above), the Flyers became the first team from the 1967 NHL expansion to win the Stanley Cup (and again the following season).

Two months later, the American League won the initial game, 4-3, in front of 47,595 spectators. Pictured above are Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth (Yankees), Chuck Klein (Phillies), and Jimmie Foxx (Athletics).

Celebrating his 46th birthday today is former University of Kansas star Danny Manning. Manning left Kansas as its all-time leading scorer and rebounder after leading the Jayhawks to the 1986 Final Four and a National Championship in 1988.

On May 16th 1985, Chicago Bulls guard Michael Jordan was named NBA Rookie of the Year. Jordan averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and six assists as the Bulls finished 38-44 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Milwaukee Bucks.
