On this day in 1980, the United States ice hockey team defeated the USSR 4-3 en route to a gold medal in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. In 1999, Sports Illustrated named the “Miracle on Ice” the Top Sports Moment of the 20^th Century.
