On this day in 1997, the University of Arizona Wildcats defeated the University of Kentucky Wildcats 84-79 in overtime to win the NCAA championship. Arizona, led by Most Outstanding Player Miles Simon, became the first school since the introduction of the 64-team bracket to defeat three #1 seeds in a single tournament.
