45 years ago today, the AFL granted a franchise to the city of Cincinnati, and former Cleveland Browns owner and coach Paul Brown named the new team the Bengals. Upon the completion of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Browns were moved to the AFL-based American Football Conference and placed in the AFC Central, the same division as the Bengals, and an instant rivalry was born.
