On July 25th 1978, Reds third baseman Pete Rose broke the National League record for consecutive games with a hit; his 1-for-3 performance against the Mets topped the previous record of 37, set by the Tommy Holmes of the Boston Braves in 1945. Less than a week later, however, Rose would go hitless against the Braves (now in Atlanta), stopping his hitting streak at 44 games (still good for third all-time).
