23 years ago today, the reigning Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers dealt center Wayne Gretzky (and two teammates) to the Los Angeles Kings for two players, $15 million in cash and the Kings’ first-round draft picks in ’89, ’91 and ’93. The trade upset Canadians to the extent that politicians demanded that the government block it, and the Canadian-born Gretzky received a four-minute standing ovation when the Kings played in Edmonton the following season.
