Today Homage wishes a happy 63rd birthday to former MLB first baseman Bill Buckner. During his 21-year career, Buckner accumulated over 2,700 hits and won a batting title in 1980, but is best remembered for his fielding error in Game Six of the 1986 World Series.

On this day in 1974, Angels pitcher Nolan Ryan struck out 19 Red Sox in a 13-inning California victory. Ryan surrendered eight hits, ten walks, and one home run, but reliever Barry Raziano got the win in the 15th.

On May 25th 1981, Boston Red Sox hall of famer Carl Yastrzemski became the fourth major leaguer in history to amass 3,000 hits, going 1-for-3 in an 8-7 victory over the visiting Cleveland Indians.

25 years ago today, California Angel Reggie Jackson hit his 537th home run, passing Mickey Mantle for sixth place on the all-time list. Jackson hit a one-on, two-out homer off Boston’s Roger Clemens in the seventh inning of an 8-5 Red Sox victory.

After the 1919 season, Babe Ruth demanded that the Red Sox double his salary, from $10,000 to $20,000. Owner Harry Frazee refused, and traded Ruth to the Yankees for $125,000 in cash and three $25,000 notes payable every year at 6% interest. Ruth officially became property of the Yankees on December 26th 1919, and the deal was announced on January 5th 1920. The following day’s New York Times predicted that “the short right field wall at the Polo Grounds should prove an easy target for Ruth next season and, playing 77 games at home, it would not be surprising if Ruth surpassed his home run record of twenty-nine circuit clouts next summer.”

36 years ago today, Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton “Pudge” Fisk hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to force a seventh game against the Cincinnati Reds in the ’75 World Series. This Game 6 was ranked #1 by MLB Network in its 20 Greatest Games poll.
