On this day in 1924, Lawrence Eugene “Larry” Doby, the first black player in the American League, was born in South Carolina. A seven-time consecutive All-Star centerfielder, Doby and teammate Satchel Paige were the first African-American players to win a World Series championship when the Cleveland Indians won in 1948.

Today Homage celebrates the 44th birthday of former Indian infielder Carlos Baerga. In 1992 and 1993, Baerga became the first second baseman since Rogers Hornsby in 1922 to have back-to-back 200+ hit, 20+ home run, 100+ RBI and .300+ average seasons.

On September 11th 1995, Ohio Governor George Voinovich proclaimed “Cleveland Indians Day.” Although the visiting Yankees won 4-0, the Tribe (led by Kenny Lofton, Omar Vizquel, and Jim Thome, above) won the AL Central by 30 games before bowing to the Atlanta Braves in the World Series.
