On this day in 1991, Lakers guard Magic Johnson served up 19 assists in a 112-106 Laker win over the Dallas Mavericks, moving him ahead of Oscar Robertson to #1 on the all-time assist list with 9,898. (John Stockton would eventually pass both Magic and The Big O with a total of 15,606 career assists.)

Celebrating his 52nd birthday today is Lakers legend and current Cavs coach Byron Scott. The 2008 NBA Coach of the Year won three titles with the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s and averaged 14.1 points per game for his career.

On March 20th 1990, the Los Angeles Lakers retired center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s #33. The 19-time All-Star and six-time MVP led the Lakers to five NBA titles in the ‘80s and retired with career averages of 24.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

On this day in 1960, the Lakers’ Elgin Baylor set a new NBA scoring record by dropping 71 points (and gathering 25 rebounds) in a win over the New York Knicks. Baylor’s 71 broke his own record of 64 points that he set in the previous season.

Celebrating his 49th birthday today is A.C. Green, who played in more consecutive games than any other player in NBA and ABA history (1,192). A three-time NBA champion with the Lakers in the late ‘80s, Green played in 1,278 out of 1,281 career games, with the three he missed coming in his second season.
