78 years ago today, 40-year-old Babe Ruth made his first appearance for the Boston Braves. Before an opening-day crowd of 25,000, Ruth accounted for all of the Braves’ runs in a 4-2 defeat of the New York Giants.

On this day in 1991, New York Giants kicker Matt Bahr made an NFC Championship Game record five field goals (including a 42-yarder as time expired) to beat the San Francisco 49ers, 15-13.

Today Homage wishes a happy 53rd birthday to former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor. Producing double-digit sacks each season from 1984 through 1990, “L.T.” led the Giants’ famed “Big Blue Wrecking Crew” defense and wins in Super Bowl XXI and XXV. Taylor was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1999.

Today Homage sends out double Super Bowl birthday wishes to Giants quarterback Eli Manning (32 years old today) and former wide receiver David Tyree (31). The pair connected on NFL Films’ “Play of the Decade” in Super Bowl XLII, as Tyree leaped to catch a Manning pass by pressing it to his helmet; the play was instrumental in the Giants’ victory over the then-undefeated New England Patriots.

On this day in 1958, what many consider to be the greatest game in NFL history took place at Yankee Stadium. Down 17-14 with two minutes to play, Baltimore QB Johnny Unitas took over at his own 14-yard line and marched the Colts 62 yards en route to a game-tying field goal. Unitas completed 26 of 40 passes for 349 yards and one touchdown as the Colts defeated the New York Giants in sudden-death overtime. On this day in 1994, the New York Giants retired the #56 of linebacker Lawrence Taylor, arguably the best defensive player in NFL history. LT recorded double-digit sacks each season from 1984 to 1990, and was named the league’s MVP in ’86, when he notched 20.5 sacks and led the Giants’ “Big Blue Wrecking Crew” to a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI.
