On this day in 1976, the ABA and NBA merged during the NBA league meetings in Hyannis, Massachusetts. In the first post-merger NBA Finals between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Philadelphia 76ers, five of the ten starters were former ABA players (Julius Erving, Caldwell Jones, George McGinnis, Dave Twardzik and Maurice Lucas).

On this day in 1990, the Detroit Pistons defeated the Portland Trailblazers 105-99 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Nine days later, the Pistons would become just the third franchise in NBA history to win back-to-back championships, joining the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.
