On this day in 1873, Maryland’s Pimlico Race Course introduced a new stakes race for three-year-olds dubbed the Preakness. The first race drew seven starters, and Survivor collected the $2,050 winning purse, winning by 10 lengths. (Pictured above is Silver Charm winning the Preakness in 1997.)
