On this day in 1990, Nelson Mandea appeared at a rally against South African apartheid at Yankee Stadium. After mayor David Dinkins placed a Yankee jacket and cap on Mandela, he smiled and declared: “You know who I am. I am a Yankee.”

43 years ago today, the New York Yankees retired Mickey Mantle’s #7. His plaque at Yankee Stadium was inscribed with the words “a great teammate” (as per Mantle’s wishes) and “a magnificent Yankee who left a legacy of unequaled courage.”

On August 30th 1937, American boxer Joe “The Brown Bomber” Louis and British champion Tommy “The Tonypandy Terror” Farr fought at Yankee Stadium before a crowd of approximately 32,000. After a closely-contested 15-round bout, Louis was unable to knock Farr down but won a controversial unanimous decision.
